Barcelona book date with Gunners

So Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o and Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be standing between Arsenal and their first European Cup in Paris in three weeks' time, rather than Andrei Shevchenko, Kaka and Jaap Stam. Milan, having suffered a 1-0 defeat after wasting several chances in the home leg last week, were denied parity when Shevchenko's header in the second half was controversially disallowed.
The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, who was among the rapturous crowd of 95,661 last night, will have noted that on the evidence of these two games Barcelona's adventurous approach will give his team a chance and could make for an encounter as thrilling as this one. Thierry Henry, coveted by Barça, will certainly fancy his chances against the often ponderous partnership of Carles Puyol and Rafael Marquez. Henry will also require considerably more support than in the semi-final defeat of Villarreal on Tuesday from team-mates who may have hands and feet full coping with a midfield that could yet include either Lionel Messi or Xavi, both currently injured.
It was a measure of the visitors' task, which they came close to achieving, that only Ajax had ever overturned a home defeat in the semi-finals of this competition. Frank Rijkaard, determined not to risk a similar fate, had insisted that Barcelona did not sit on their lead and they declined to do so in a game played at the pace of a Premiership encounter with perhaps four times the skill.
It takes two to make that sort of match and Milan played their part. Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi often had the guile to outwit the home defence while Kaka was more successful than in the first leg at escaping Edmilson. Opportunities were shared as play switched from one penalty area to the other at often bewildering speed.
Neither defence was secure, Milan's unexpectedly suffering from the late inclusion of Alessandro Costacurta, two days after blowing out 40 candles on his birthday cake. He showed his age more than once and collected the night's first booking just before half-time for a cynical trip on the lively Eto'o. Costacurta also hooked off the line after his error had let Eto'o in; and the substitute Henrik Larsson demanded a good save from Dida.
But Milan's followers high in the Nou Camp had plenty of positive moments to crane their necks towards, above all in the 68th minute. Shevchenko was justifiably convinced he had scored, only to have what looked a clean header chalked off for an alleged push on Puyol. The referee Markus Merk performed his warm-down half an hour after the finish with Milanese whistles ringing in his burning ears.
Wenger said: "Ronaldinho can produce something special in any moment but I saw some encouraging things. The important thing is to go with the right belief."
Barcelona (4-3-3): Valdes; Belletti, Marquez, Puyol, Van Bronckhorst; Deco, Edmilson, Iniesta; Giuly (Larsson, 68), Eto'o (Van Bommel, 89), Ronaldinho. Substitutes not used: Jorquera (gk), Motta, Maxi, Silvinho, Gabri.
Milan (4-3-1-2): Dida; Stam, Costacurta (Cafu, 64), Kaladze, Serginho; Gattuso (Rui Costa, 68), Pirlo, Seedorf; Kaka; Shevchenko, Inzaghi (Gilardino, 79). Substitutes not used: Kalac (gk), Maldini, Vogel, Jankulovski.

Arsenal v Juventus

Defender Sol Campbell has been ruled out of the Arsenal side for their Champions League quarter-final with Juventus on Tuesday night.
Campbell had regained full fitness after nearly two months out for the Gunners, first for a leave of absence after his terrible performance against West Ham on February 1, then for an ankle injury picked up in training.
However Arsene Wenger revealed on Monday that he now has a bruised toe: "Sol has a small setback following a bad tackle in training on Sunday.
"We think it will be 48 hours. It is just bad bruising on his toe, it is nothing major.
"I had planned to involve him tomorrow night, but cannot do as he could not practice today."
Robin van Persie comes back into the side after his long lay-off, but Freddie Ljungberg has been ruled out with a calf injury and Jose Antonio Reyes is a concern due to a hamstring strain.
Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor is cup-tied following his move from Monaco, while Ashley Cole (ankle), Pascal Cygan (hamstring), Arturo Lupoli (foot) and long-term absentee Lauren (knee) are all still missing.
Meanwhile Juventus will be without their all-time leading goalscorer Alessandro del Pierro who is suffering with a thigh injury.
The striker left the field after just 15 minutes of Juve's 1-1 draw with Roma on Saturday, but is expected to return for the second leg on 5 April.
Juve can call on Zlatan Ibrahimovic to partner David Trezeguet up front in the place of del Pierro, but more worrying for the Serie A leaders will be the absence of Pavel Nedved, who will miss the game through suspension.
Squads:
Arsenal: Lehmann, Almunia, Eboue, Toure, Senderos, Hleb, Flamini, Fabregas, Gilberto, Pires, Henry, Djourou, Song, Bergkamp, van Persie, Reyes, Walcott, Diaby.
Juventus: Buffon, Chiellini, Vieira, Kovac, Pessotto, Emerson, Ibrahimovic, Balzaretti, Camoranesi, Trezeguet, Mutu, Zambrotta, Blasi, Thuram, Bonnefoi, Giannichedda, Olivera, Zalayeta, Zebina, Cannavaro, Abbiati.
Verdict: Nobody gave Arsenal a hope going into the tie against Real Madrid, but in the end they showed just what they are capable of when they're up against a real challenge. However Juventus are a much better side than Madrid at the moment, and so the Gunners will have to raise the bar once again. The question is how high can they go? A draw looks likely, but Arsenal could shade it by a goal.

Arsenal v Juventus; Gunners Look To Ruin Vieira's Return

Arsenal go into Tuesday night’s Champions League quarter final first leg tie with Juventus at Highbury (March 28) as the only English representatives remaining in the competition.
The Gunners are as yet unbeaten in this season’s competition, emerging from a first round group containing Ajax, Sparta Prague and FC Thun before overcoming the more celebrated Real Madrid in the last 16. The Serie A champions currently represent an altogether tougher challenge for Arsene Wenger’s men than the Spaniards, but hopes remain high of progression.
This is due largely to the return to form of the north London side in recent weeks. While qualification for the Champions League for next season is far from assured at this stage, Arsenal seem to have put their patchy form of mid-season behind them. A thumping 4-0 win at Fulham on March 4 immediately preceded the goalless draw which took them past Real Madrid on March 8, while home wins over Liverpool on March 12 and Charlton Athletic on March 18 have kept them in touch with the Premiership’s top four.
Meanwhile Juventus still hold an eight point lead at the top of the Italian championship, that despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Roma in Turin on Saturday (March 25). In Europe they sailed through a group containing Bayern Munich, Club Brugge and Rapid Vienna, but are still somewhat fortunate to have reached this stage. On the verge of elimination during their second round clash with Werder Bremen of Germany, the Italians benefited from a glaring goalkeeping error in the final moments of the second leg to keep their hopes alive.
The postponement of Arsenal’s weekend date with Portsmouth due to a waterlogged Fratton Park pitch may help Wenger’s side. Having had over a week to prepare for the visit of The Old Lady, the Highbury club may be the fresher of the two sides. However, both have their fair share of absentees for the clash with injuries and suspensions taking their usual toll.
Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira returns to the club with which he made his name, but fellow superstar Pavel Nedved is ruled out due to suspension. Also missing out is long-time Juve and Italy talisman Allesandro Del Piero, who is suffering from a thigh injury. David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic look set to start in attack, ensuring a busy night for Arsenal’s improving but inexperienced back-line.
Sol Campbell will again be missing from that unit. Having recovered from an ankle injury the former Tottenham Hotspur defender now has a bruised toe and will not feature. This should see Phillipe Senderos and Kolo Toure continue their central defensive partnership, with the Ivorian one booking away from a suspension ahead of the return fixture in Turin next week. Emmanuel Eboue and Matthieu Flamini should continue in the full-back roles in the continued absence of Lauren and Ashley Cole.
The problems in the Arsenal team are not limited to defence, with the experienced Freddie Ljunberg ruled out with a calf problem, and a hamstring strain making Jose Antonio Reyes doubtful. Alexander Hleb may start in place of Ljungberg, while Robert Pires could deputise for Reyes if he fails to prove his fitness in time. On the positive side, Robin van Persie is fit again after a troublesome broken toe which has kept him out of action for long spells this season.
The tie at Highbury will mark the fifth occasion that these two sides have met in European competition. The English side emerged victorious from the 1980 Cup Winners Cup semi-final over two legs, drawing 1-1 on home soil before a single goal triumph in Italy. The clubs also met in the second group stage of the 2002 Champions League competition, with Arsenal winning 3-1 at home but losing 1-0 in the Stadio Delle Alpi.
Looking a little wider Juventus’ record in England is a poor one. Last year’s 2-1 defeat to eventual Champions League winners Liverpool at Anfield was one four defeats in a row on English turf, having been beaten by Manchester United and Newcastle United aswell as Arsenal in recent years. In additon, Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have both knocked the Turin giants out of European competition in their illustrious history.
Much of the spotlight is likely to be on Vieira on his return. He is likely to receive a warm reception from the faithful before the game, but expect the Highbury crowd to turn on him once the action gets under way. Key absentees on both sides make it difficult to predict what will happen, but it is imperative that the Arsenal rearguard continue their recent progress and shut out an outfit which still contains an array of sparkling talent.
Van Persie could be an X-factor for the home side, and so with an optimistic hat placed firmly atop my head and with one eye on Juventus’ poor record on these shores, a narrow Gunners win may just be the likeliest outcome.
Verdict; Arsenal 1 Juventus 0

Warm welcome for Vieira as Gunners warm up v Juventus

Patrick Vieira received a warm reception on his return to Highbury as Arsenal took on Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.The former Gunners captain, who left north London last summer, was applauded by home fans in the warm-up and lined up alongside Emerson in an experienced midfield for the Serie A champions.Former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu also started, but Pavel Nedved’s suspension kept him out while Alessandro Del Piero was sidelined by a thigh injury.Jose Reyes returned for Arsenal after missing three games through injury, but Freddie Ljungberg was not fit.Robin van Persie was back on the bench again after making his comeback against Charlton on Arsenal’s last outing.Arsenal: Lehmann, Eboue, Toure, Senderos, Flamini, Hleb, Silva, Fabregas, Pires, Henry, Reyes.
